It had been a week or two since we first started talking. There had been a lot of texting and talking on the phone. Just trying to get to know each other better. We were at school and without transportation so it was hard to go on dates. Instead, we would go to the food court. They called it the ‘steakhouse’ which never made much sense to either of us. The food was either burnt, frozen, or gave you diarrhea. Plus, they never served steak. That first time we went together was rather embarrassing for me. At the ‘steakhouse,’ the tables are big and circular with four chairs to sit on. Of course, instinctively, I decided to use my youthful charm. I took the seat opposite hers. Picture this, the table is about six feet in diameter and the two of us are sitting on opposite ends. We were basically in two different zip codes. I was completely oblivious to the shockingly poor decision that I had made. Thankfully, one of my friends had shown up while I was in the bathroom and took the seat opposite hers. When I reached the table again I was forced to sit in the seat next to her. It was only natural for my friend to be laughing and making fun of my poor choice. Embarrassingly, that was the point when I realized my mistake. I didn’t know it at the time but that moment wouldn’t be forgotten in the years to come. I quickly realized that the embarrassment hadn’t mattered. It would be another memory that tied us together. That was all I cared about.
