I am by no means musically inclined. I am not known for my love of music by friends or family. In most cases, I’m known for hating music. However, there are a few artists and songs that grab my attention. For whatever reason, the artist Don Toliver has always been a favorite of mine. I’ve been a fan of his since ‘Donny Womack’ in 2018. He had been featured in a few hits prior but nothing caught my attention like that first album.
Yesterday Don Toliver released his latest album Love Sick. As soon as I heard that it dropped I stopped whatever I was supposed to be doing and started listening. To no surprise of my own, I was immediately hooked. Now to be fair I don’t listen to songs for the lyrics or the beat or whatever you’re supposed to. I listen to songs to see how they make me feel. A lot of the songs on this album make me feel good. In particular, the songs I believe to be ‘hits’ are Slow motion and Do it Right. Some others I liked were Bus Stop, Honeymoon, 4 Me, and Leather Coat.
The reason that I am writing this post other than my appreciation for his music is because of the hate he got in a post from Rolling Stone. After I had finished listening to the album I went to Google to read reviews. I stumbled upon Rolling Stone’s post claiming the album fell ‘flat’ and felt as a fan I needed to come to his defense.
Love Sick is a solid album with a couple of bangers. There isn’t much more you can ask for from a new release. Not every song can be a top hit on an album. One or two hits per album are more than enough. No doubt this latest release is a success.
