Today I started reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. This is the first book that I’ve ever read by Mr. Gaiman. I’m not particularly well-versed in any of his publications. To be quite frank I had never heard of him before I watched a YouTube video that highly recommended this novel. Expectations going into this book were low. However, I knew that It had to be decent because the person recommending the book has similar tastes to my own. At first, after I read the little excerpt before the prologue I was convinced that this book wasn’t for me. All that I could think was “What is this guy talking about.” Then I worked my way through the prologue, immediately I plunged into a different world. The midway point of the novel came after what had only felt like seconds. It was genuinely difficult to take my eyes off the page. What I’ve taken away thus far is that Gaiman’s prose is pure magic. Every sentence is written beautifully. It feels like I’m reading a painting (which is a good thing). Also, the prologue in this book might be the best that I’ve ever read. The description of the man’s suit was so eloquent that I was hooked immediately. I’m absolutely loving this novel so far. I can’t wait to finish.
Thank you, Neil. This book has been a breath of fresh air. I’m so fortunate to have come across your work.
Go check out the book!
